Longshaw Sheep Dog Trials are usually held in September. The Longshaw Sheep Dog Trials claim to be the oldest continuous trials in the country. They have been run from 1898 to the present day, interrupted only by the two world wars. This sheep had other ideas about being penned up.Bakewell has one of the oldest markets in the area, dating from at least 1300. Markets are still held every Monday and, unlike most of the other local centres, there is a thriving livestock market at the Agricultural Centre which is well worth a visit. The big event of the year is the annual Bakewell Show, which takes place the first Wednesday and Thursday in August and attracts farmers and many others from all over the Peak District and surrounding areas.Only two miles away, Castleton has four show caves and Peveril Castle, offering breathtaking views. Following extensive conservation work on the keep, a walk-way erected at first floor level enables visitors to enter two chambers previously inaccessible: a medieval garderobe, and a small room with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.Castleton Village Annual Christmas Lights. 

Late night shopping on weekends in DecemberMany recreational activities available near the Howden and Derwent dams including cycle hire, plenty of footpaths and bridleways, fishing, and walking. The Fairholmes Visitors Centre located very near to The Derwent Dam has information, refreshments and cycle hire. The Derwent Valley Museum houses a collection of memorabilia, photographs and other material covering aspects of the Dambusters raid and material relating to The Dambusters film made in 1954. There is a life size replica of the bouncing bomb as well as some rare photographs of life in the villages that were to be flooded.  Opening times for the small and free museum, situated in the West Tower are from 10.00am till 4.00pm Sundays and Bank Holidays only.
